Pediatrician Ijeoma Ohuche shares with ease the realities of a country like Nigeria, which faces many challenges but continues striving for progress. In addition to working in several hospitals, she also directs the Uzommiri Study Centre, a non-profit organization established in 1972 that focuses on educating girls between the ages of 8 and 25.

The center offers a variety of activities to complement the girls’ education, including fostering academic excellence, providing spiritual training, offering mentoring, and engaging in a robust program of social commitment. Dr. Ohuche highlights this last aspect, emphasizing her efforts to instill in the girls a sense of responsibility through community service every Saturday. She insists that it’s essential for the girls to give back to society what they have received—a task that is not always easy for the younger participants.

The social initiatives are diverse, from tutoring children in need to simply spending time with them and offering attention and care.

Fomento de Fundaciones has supported Uzommiri’s projects for some time, promoting Sustainable Development Goals through initiatives such as installing solar panels, water supply systems, and other essential infrastructure that might be taken for granted in Western Europe. Dr. Ohuche deeply appreciates this support, emphasizing that the help they seek is financial and human—committed individuals willing to contribute their time and energy.

The center has established four healthcare schools that train women in basic health practices. Over the past 20 years, these schools have directly trained between 4,000 and 5,000 students, creating a ripple effect that has impacted tens of thousands within their communities. Dr. Ohuche expresses profound gratitude for their assistance, recognizing that, though often invisible, it has brought significant benefits to the community, transforming the lives of thousands.
