“The financial support I received was crucial in my life; I strive to multiply It by helping others”

Facundo Garayoa, born in Córdoba, Argentina, exemplifies how education and social commitment can transform lives. At 50 years old, Facundo shares a journey far beyond his Mechanical Engineering degree. He began his studies in Buenos Aires, completed them in Córdoba, and later earned a Master’s in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and Theology in Rome. However, his calling took a dramatic turn in 2008 when, thanks to the support of Fomento de Fundaciones, he was able to dedicate himself entirely to an NGO he had founded a few years earlier, which has since become his life’s work.

Inspired by the model of providing opportunities through scholarships and financial support—something he personally benefited from to continue his education—Facundo founded FONBEC. This organization offers financial aid to underprivileged youth in Argentina and Bolivia. Today, after 25 years of effort, his NGO operates 17 branches in Argentina and two in Bolivia, having awarded scholarships to over 5,000 students and currently supporting 2,200 young people at risk of dropping out due to economic hardship.

The mission of the organization is clear: to provide educational opportunities to those who need them most, regardless of their background, ideology, or religion. The profile of the scholarship recipients includes students with strong academic performance but significant financial difficulties.

The NGO is supported by a network of 300 volunteers or mediators across the country, individuals deeply committed to understanding the realities of these students. They facilitate the selection process, provide ongoing support, and ensure effective communication.

Facundo explains how, thanks to the organization, many of these students have overcome highly challenging conditions, such as living without running water or heating. Each scholarship represents an opportunity to change lives.

For Facundo, this work is his way of giving back the support he once received, aiming to multiply that impact. His greatest satisfaction is seeing former scholarship recipients, inspired by their own experiences, now working with the NGO, contributing their knowledge and empathy. Supporting education creates a multiplier effect that transforms individuals and communities.
